Q4 sales up double digits at Tiffany

New York--Worldwide sales rose 17 percent for Tiffany and Co. in the fourth quarter 2009 compared to the same period a year ago--including an 11 percent increase in U.S. same-store sales--but fell 5 percent for the year, according to results released by the retailer Monday.

For the three months ended Jan. 31, 2010, net worldwide sales increased to $981.4 million, compared with $837.6 million in fourth-quarter 2008. Sales for the fiscal year 2009, ended Jan. 31, declined to $2.71 billion from $2.85 billion in 2008.
 
“We were very pleased with the sales results in the fourth quarter, which reflected growth in most countries, product categories and price points,” said Tiffany and Co. Chairman Michael J. Kowalski. “Notwithstanding the global economic challenges over the past year, the decisive measures we took to control spending were successful and, combined with the considerable and growing international awareness of the Tiffany and Co. brand, helped us to generate strong earnings and free cash flow.”
 
Same-store U.S. sales rose 11 percent in the fourth quarter and fell 15 percent for the fiscal year, with sales in the New York flagship store up 22 percent in the fourth quarter but down 15 percent on the year. U.S. branch store sales, meanwhile, were up 8 percent in the fourth quarter but also down 15 percent on the year. Combined U.S. Internet and catalog sales rose 16 percent in the fourth quarter and fell 1 percent for the year.
 
Tiffany and Co. opened one store in the fourth quarter in the U.S. market, in Las Vegas, according to the release.

Looking ahead to 2010, the company is calling for it worldwide sales to climb another 11 percent and plans to open 17 stores, six of them in the Americas.

“In 2010, we will remain focused on meaningful opportunities to expand our global store base, realize market share gains in a changing competitive environment and enhance profitability,” Kowalski said. “We believe that Tiffany has the ability to deliver healthy sales and earnings growth and, in fact, have begun the year with worldwide sales growth exceeding our first quarter plan, which calls for high-teens percentage increase. Tiffany has the necessary components for ongoing success--compelling products, organizational and financial strength, an efficient infrastructure and a premium brand that is increasingly recognized for lasting value.”
 
According to the release, as of Jan. 31, Tiffany operated 220 stores worldwide, including 91 in the Americas, compared to 206 locations a year ago, with 86 stores in the Americas.
