New York Jewelers Crime Alert Network launches

New York--At the request of the Jewelers Security Alliance (JSA), the New York Jewelers Crime Alert Network (NYJCAN.com) has been formed to enable New York City jewelers to distribute information about crimes and attempted crimes quickly and efficiently to their colleagues via e-mail and fax.

"Community-based networks are one of the most effective ways to prevent crimes and catch criminals who prey on the jewelry industry," Paul Silverman, administrator of the network, said in a media release.

According to the JSA, which has been encouraging and assisting with the formation of community-based crime-prevention networks around the country, there are approximately 45 similar networks operating around the nation. The goal of the networks is to quickly share information on crimes, attempted crimes and suspicious situations with the rest of the industry and with law enforcement.

"Crimes do not occur in a vacuum. Getting the word out after an incident is the best way to prevent the same group from hitting another jeweler," Silverman said in the release.

Members of the jewelry industry and law enforcement are invited to participate in this project free of charge. The network is an e-mail- and fax-based system. Individuals who want to receive crime alerts are asked to provide their contact information and an e-mail address or fax number.

"The more members we have participating, the more information we will be able to send out," Silverman said in the release.

Jewelers who experience a crime or suspicious incident, such as a grab and run, armed robbery, traveling salesperson theft, credit card scam, etc., in the New York City area, should contact the Network Administrator, after notifying the police. Once the jeweler reports the crime to the network, a crime alert about the incident will then be quickly distributed to the members of the network.

To join the New York Jewelers Crime Alert Network, visit its Web site, NYJCAN.com, and complete the Participation Request form, or contact the Network Administrator at admin@nyjcan.com. An Incident Report form can also be obtained by visiting the Web site or by contacting the Network Administrator.
