Rio Tinto 2009 pink tender to feature 43 stones

Forty-three pink diamonds will be on display for Rio Tinto's 25th Argyle Pink Diamond Tender.

Perth, Australia--Forty-three pink diamonds, including four heart-shaped gems, will be offered as part of Rio Tinto's 25th Argyle Pink Diamond Tender.

The tender, titled "Grand Passions," will feature the rarest and best pink diamonds from Rio Tinto's Argyle Diamond Mine in Western Australia.

For the first time, Rio Tinto is bringing the tender to Mumbai, India, where a viewing is slated for Aug. 6-10. After that, tender viewings are scheduled to take place in Perth, Australia, (Sept. 1-11) and in Hong Kong (Sept. 19-27).

Rio Tinto is not, however, taking the tender to New York.

In addition, for the first time, Argyle Pink Diamonds Select Ateliers in London, Perth and Sydney, Australia, will showcase the stones to clients at in-store preview events.

"The pink diamonds selected for this year's tender are a fitting tribute to the artistry and passion of all of those who worked to bring them to the market place," Josephine Archer, business manager for Argyle Pink Diamonds, said in a media release. "These diamonds are for appreciators of the truly exceptional, and we are delighted to be showcasing them to the world."

Included in the Grand Passions collection is a 2.61-carat heart-shaped intense-pink diamond dubbed "Argyle Amour."

According to the release, the Argyle Amour is the most valuable heart-shaped pink diamond ever produced from the Argyle Mine.

The two other "hero" stones included in the collection are the "Argyle Shalimar," a 1.25-carat purplish-pink round diamond named after the exotic garden sanctuary built by Indian emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife, and the "Argyle Scarlett," a 1.10-carat oval-shaped red diamond.

Jean-Marc Lieberherr, general manager of sales and marketing for all the diamonds from Rio Tinto's mines, said the excitement around this tender is understandable.

"The rarity of Argyle pink diamonds has created a connoisseurship for them, and there is a growing recognition that the earth will not produce pink diamonds for that much longer," he said.
