J. Fred Woell, recipient of the 2010 Florida Society of Goldsmiths National Metalsmith's Hall of Fame award, is known for integrating found objects, such as keys and coins, into jewelry designs like this one above.

St. Petersburg, Fla.--The Florida Society of Goldsmiths (FSG) has named jewelry designer and educator J. Fred Woell, known for turning found objects into eye-catching jewelry, as the recipient of the 2010 FSG National Metalsmith's Hall of Fame award.

With a career in art and education that spans 50 years, Woell has taught a number of well-known jewelry artists and is renowned for his use of political and social commentary in the creation of jewelry.

Woell's works, which use a variety of found objects or junk (he is believed to be the first to have done this with jewelry) are in the permanent collections of museums across the country, including the American Craft Museum, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian, the Contemporary Museum of Honolulu, the Detroit Institute of Art and the Cranbrook Academy of Art Museum.

He has been published in Metalsmith and Ornament magazines, as well as numerous jewelry reference books. In addition, he is the author of Handouts from the 20th Century: A Collection of Teaching Aids Created and Gathered by J. Fred Woell During 20 Years of Teaching.

Woell holds a master's degree in fine art (MFA) from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, as well as MFAs from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. His own teaching career has included teaching positions at Boston University; Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Mass.; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine; and the State University of New York at New Paltz.

FSG has honored Woell with its Hall of Fame award in the Artist/Arts Educator categories. The society also gives out awards in two other categories: arts patron and business patron.
