Antwerp upbeat as polished, rough figures rise

Antwerp, Belgium--Imports and exports of both rough and polished diamonds increased for the fifth consecutive month in the diamond-trading center of Antwerp, Belgium, with per-carat prices for diamonds growing robustly, statistics released Wednesday show.

"Demand for polished goods has risen phenomenally with statistics indicating that not only do buyers want diamonds, but that they are willing to pay higher prices per carat for polished goods," a press release from the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) says. "Polished exports once again showed much higher rises in financial terms than increases in volume."

The report indicates demand for polished diamonds has increased in both volume and value terms, likely attributable to wholesale and retail restocking after a considerable period of de-stocking due to the recession.

In May, Belgian polished diamond exports climbed 4 percent to 629,984 carats in terms of volume as compared to May 2009 and increased 39 percent in value to $920.5 million. For the first five months of the year--from January to May--polished exports increased 2.3 percent in volume terms to 2.95 million carats and 29.3 percent in value terms to $4.26 billion.

Polished diamond imports totaled 612,563 carats in May, an increase of 3.3 percent over May 2009. In value terms, they shot up 44.7 percent to $733.5 million. For the first five months of year, the increases were 3.6 percent to 3.21 million carats in volume terms and 28.5 percent to $3.97 billion in value terms.

Rough imports and exports showed similar gains in the month of May and through the first five months of the year.

According to statistics provided by the AWDC, Belgium exported 11 million carats of rough diamonds in May, a 64.8 percent increase over May 2009. In value terms, rough exports jumped 51.8 percent to $857.2 million. In rough diamond imports, Belgium bought 8.74 million carats of rough goods in May worth $705.1 million, increases of 63.7 percent and 73.6 percent respectively.

For the first five months of the year, rough diamond imports climbed 65.8 percent to 50.4 million carats worth $4 billion, a 101.4 percent increased compared to the first five months of 2009.

"If as expected this trend continues, 2010 will be a glittering year for Belgium's diamond industry," the release said.
