De Beers releases annual 'Report to Society'

London--Diamond giant De Beers announced on Tuesday the release of its "Report to Society 2009," an annual examination of how the De Beers family of companies is promoting sustainable development and contributing to the communities in which it has a presence.

In releasing the report, De Beers cited a comment from U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, which she made while speaking at a forum with Nigerian Foreign Minister Ojo Maduekwe in Abuja, Nigeria, in August 2009.

"So for example when you buy a diamond from De Beers, part of that money still today goes to help build and maintain roads and clean water systems in Botswana," Clinton said. "You can drive anywhere in that country and you can see services that have been paid for by a legal framework, strong regulations and a national consensus that the money from the earth and its riches should be spent on the people of Botswana."

According to a news release from De Beers, among other topics, the report addresses the challenges faced by the Kimberley Process (KP) in dealing with alleged human rights abuses in Zimbabwe over the past year. The report notes that De Beers is in favor of having a permanent secretariat for the process--as of now, the chairmanship of the KP changes every year--establishing majority rather than consensus voting and including human rights language within the KP framework.

De Beers Chairman Nicky Oppenheimer gives the introduction to the report, which states in part: "The restructuring exercise we undertook in 2009 has provided us with the opportunity to hardwire sustainability into our 'new normal' and exploit the clear synergies that exist between running a sustainable and responsible business and a profitable one."

Highlights of the report include:

De Beers Family of Companies experienced zero fatalities for the first time in 80 years, while the lost time injury severity rate improved from 106.89 per 200,000 hours to 6.52 in 2009.

De Beers paid $3.4 billion to stakeholders around the world, despite a 49 percent decline in diamond production.

More than $580 million in rough diamonds were supplied to sightholders for manufacturing in southern Africa, as compared to $1.1 billion in 2008.

De Beers disbursed $29.3 million in community social investment in 2009, including contractually mandated initiatives and in-kind contributions.

Social impact assessments were carried out in Botswana for the Cut-8 expansion project at the Jwaneng mine, as well as the expansion of the Morupule coal mine.

De Beers continued to provide anti-retroviral treatment to 1,820 employees and their partners in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

In 2009, De Beers used 2.1 million cubic meters of new potable and non-potable water at its mining operations, a 41 percent decline from 2008. The company's use of reused and recycled water equals 57 percent of its total water footprint.
