Walmart to test jewelry, other goods for cadmium

Bentonville, Ark.--In response to media reports that spotlighted the use of cadmium in children's jewelry made in China, Walmart said it is making sure that all children's costume jewelry, children's jewelry craft-making kits, toys and other child care articles are tested before they land on shelves.

The crackdown was spurred by an Associated Press (AP) investigative report released in January, which revealed that lab tests conducted on 103 pieces of low-priced children's jewelry manufactured in China and sold in the United States found 12 items with dangerously high levels of cadmium, a known carcinogen.

There are no government regulations on how much cadmium may be used in children's jewelry, but in the wake of the report, Walmart voluntarily pulled cadmium-suspect jewelry from its shelves, as did accessories retailer Claire's, teen clothing and accessories retailer Aeropostale and Saks Fifth Avenue outlet stores.

Now, Walmart says it is implementing a policy to keep jewelry and other children's products that might contain cadmium out of its stores permanently. The company launched its own review and testing, and continues to actively participate in the Consumer Product Safety Commission's review, along with suppliers and industry associations, to determine what standards should be established.

"These proactive steps resulted in our adoption of new Walmart testing standards very similar to the British Standard Safety of Toys-Part 3, widely considered a leading safety standard," the company said in a release. "All toys, child care articles, children's costume jewelry and children's jewelry craft-making kits tested on or after April 9, 2010, must meet these new Walmart requirements. We have communicated this in detail to our suppliers, and require full compliance."

The policy does not impact items on shelves now, according to the AP.

In China, product safety officials have reportedly been investigating and warning the nation's jewelry manufacturers against using cadmium as well.

On Jan. 22, China's top product safety watchdog, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, issued an emergency alert and ordered officials around the country to get Chinese manufacturers to cease using cadmium in their jewelry products.

Since the alert, officials in several Chinese cities have told jewelry manufacturers that they will be shut down if their products are found to contain cadmium, an AP report says.
