Pearls: Fla. seeks pearl industry, more

Boca Raton, Fla.—Pearls have been making the news recently, with a Florida oceanographic institute receiving a grant to accelerate commercialization of a technique to produce cultured pearls and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) revving up to present its pearl expertise at the upcoming International Pearl Conference.

Last month, the 2010 Florida Legislature and the Florida Technology, Research and Scholarship Board presented Florida Atlantic University's (FAU) Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute with a State University Commercialization Assistance Grant. The grant will be used to accelerate commercialization of a patent-pending technique to produce cultured pearls from the queen conch and, in the process, create a new Florida-based industry.

According to the institute, until recently, all attempts to reliably culture pearls from the queen conch were unsuccessful. But through a novel seeding technique developed at Harbor Branch, researchers have achieved more than 200 queen conch cultured pearls.

The institute says that co-inventors Megan Davis and Hector Acosta-Salmon have been able to produce beaded and non-beaded cultured pearls from the queen conch using two different seeding techniques to induce pearl formation. One is a modification of the convention technique used to produce cultured pearls in freshwater mussels, and the other is a modification of the conventional technique used in marine pearl oysters.

The institute has since teamed up with Rose Pearl, LLC, a company established in August 2010 that serves as FAU's industry partner and licensee of the technology.

According to the institute, the grant will help Harbor Branch to leverage the techniques it has developed to create the world's first queen conch culture pearl production and marketing business headquartered in Florida.

Separately, GIA is taking its pearl expertise to the Middle East this month through participation in the International Pearl Conference and the International Jewellery & Watch Show, both taking place in Abu Dhabi.

On Nov. 19 at the International Pearl Conference, Nirupa Bhatt, managing director of GIA India and the Middle East, will present "A Global Perspective on Trends in the Global Diamond, Colored Stone and Pearl Industry with a Focus on India Markets."

Meanwhile, GIA will offer 11 informative sessions during the International Jewellery & Watch Show, including an introduction to pearls, a session on how to buy and care for pearls, and a seminar titled "Into the World of Pearls." All three sessions will be hosted by Seung-Hae Moon, GIA managing director of education, Asia Pacific.

The International Jewellery & Watch Show begins tomorrow, Nov. 10 and runs through Nov. 14.
