Diamond teeth, iPhone? Excess rules the headlines

Liverpool, England—For many, conspicuous consumption is still out of
style as the economy struggles to recover. Some, however, seemed to have
missed the memo. News reports over the last week chronicled the launch
of an $8 million, diamond-studded iPhone as well as stories that a
well-known rapper replaced his teeth with diamonds.

British
jeweler Stuart Hughes, known for creating luxury gadgets such as mobile
phones, gaming systems and iPads crafted from solid gold, is offering
what he is calling the world's most expensive iPhone. As featured on
Hughes's Web site, StuartHughes.com, the iPhone 4
"Diamond Rose" is priced at 5 million British pounds, or about $8
million.

The rose gold phone features a bezel covered with
approximately 500 individual diamonds totaling over 100 carats. In
addition, the back side features 53 diamonds that together shape Apple's
logo. Meanwhile, the phone's main navigation button on the bottom front
is crafted from platinum and holds a single 7.4-carat pink diamond.

And
if all that isn't enough for the phone's buyers (only two editions will
ever be made, the jeweler says), the handset also comes with an 8-carat
diamond that can be switched in to replace the 7.4-carat pink stone.
Finally, the phone comes in a granite chest lined with Nubuck leather.

in diamond excess news this week: Rapper Kanye West has been showing
off his latest diamond accessories—diamond teeth. According to Britain's
Daily Mail, the rapper asked his dentist to remove his bottom
row of teeth and replace them with a set of diamond and gold implants.

According
to the report, West showed off his new set of chompers on The Ellen
DeGeneres Show earlier this week.
