The 'People's Choice?': Diamonds and platinum

Los Angeles--The 2010 awards show season has officially kicked off, and it seems that the stars are ringing in this new decade in the same manner that they rang in the last one: with plenty of bling.

At the 2010 People's Choice Awards, which aired Wednesday evening, classic jewelry designs prevailed, including diamond line bracelets and diamond and platinum stud earrings.

Bracelet and earring pairings appeared to be the favored combination in jewelry wardrobing this time around, with necklaces largely missing, an absence that was perhaps dictated by the numerous asymmetrical neckline gowns that seemed to swarm the red carpet this year.

Among those indulging in such gowns were singer Mary J. Blige, Big Love actress Ginnifer Goodwin and comedian Niecy Nash. And host Queen Latifah, during one of her many wardrobe changes, sported a one-shoulder gown as well.

To accessorize, Blige wore platinum earrings with colorless and brown diamonds, plus a platinum bracelet with multicolored diamonds by Lorraine Schwartz; Goodwin picked Van Cleef and Arpels, selecting the brand's "Decollete" earrings and ring with a diamond "Fleurette" line bracelet; and Nash chose platinum and diamond circle earrings, a platinum cuff with yellow and colorless diamonds, and a platinum and diamond ring by Neil Lane.

As for Queen Latifah, the singer and actress opted to forego the bracelet and earring combo and choose earrings and a ring instead: platinum and diamond drop earrings plus a platinum and diamond ring from Neil Lane. And in response to the question of how to further accessorize an asymmetrical gown without going the necklace route, Latifah pinned a sparkling Neil Lane brooch right at her shoulder.

There was an abundance of platinum on the red carpet--People's Choice winners Taylor Swift and Mariah Carey each snagged their awards in Neil Lane platinum and diamond bracelets and earrings; and television veterans Kelly Rutherford, of Gossip Girl, and Kaley Cuoco, of The Big Bang Theory, picked Van Cleef's diamond and platinum "Snowflake" earrings and a Beleadora.com platinum and diamond ring and stud earrings, respectively. Still, gold and silver made showings of their own.

Sandra Bullock, voted by the public as "Favorite Movie Actress," scooped up her award in Amrapali rose-cut diamond and 18-karat yellow gold earrings and a matching bracelet. Meanwhile, for another outfit change, Queen Latifah jumped into Amrapali too, pairing a white gown with the brand's rose-cut diamond, silver and gold earrings, and a matching rose-cut diamond and gold cuff. Megan Park, from The Secret Life of the American Teenager, selected 18-karat gold designs as well: Erica Courtney's 18-karat gold and diamond bezel huggies, 18-karat gold and diamond stackable rings, and 18-karat rose gold and diamond bar bracelet.

As for additional styles, Johnny Depp sported a Neil Lane gold and platinum pocket watch and chain, and actress and singer Demi Lovato broke away from the pack and donned a statement necklace, Carrera y Carrera's "Mumtaz Mahal" in 18-karat gold with diamonds, plus the brand's "Ginko" ring and "Paso Doble" bracelet, also in 18-karat gold with diamonds.
