Report: De Beers' body scanners airport-bound?

Johannesburg, South Africa--DebTech, the research and development arm of De Beers, said recently that it will make its body-scanning technology available to airports, as security is stepped up worldwide in the wake of the attempted Christmas Day terrorist attack, Creamer Media's Engineering News Online reports.

According to the report, DebTech marketing manager Nico van Zyl said the company had begun discussions with the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and plans to market its Scannex X-ray body scanner--a machine that can detect even the smallest diamonds and which De Beers uses primarily for "resource protection"--to other countries as well.

The Scannex is a full-body X-ray machine that gives off a low-dose of radiation, allowing for a number of scans to be performed each year without health risks.
According to the report, the scan is non-intrusive, providing only an outline of a person's body, and scans take only about 10 seconds, with DebTech reporting up to 90 scans an hour with one unit.

ACSA said Monday it was not yet planning to implement the use of full-body scanners but DebTech sees great potential for the Scannex system to be rolled out at airports in the United States and Europe, according to the report.
The issue of full-body scanners at airports comes in the wake of a Nigerian man's attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound Northwest flight that originated in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The man had the explosives sewn into his underwear, allowing him to pass through airport security without raising any alarms.

The security breach prompted the United States and other Western countries to start implementing the use of full-body scanners at international airports. The United States has announced new screening procedures for 14 countries that include full-body pat downs, searches of carry-on luggage and full-body scans.

According to the Engineering News Online report, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands already have indicated that they would be installing body scanners, while Nigeria's civil aviation authority has reportedly said it also would implement such procedures this year.
