Contemporary jewelry gets daylong museum program

New York--The Museum of Arts and Design will present a special daylong program exploring contemporary studio jewelry on Saturday, Sept. 12.

"Jewelry Study Day: Material and Technique in Contemporary Art Jewelry Design" will take place at the museum's Columbus Circle location in Manhattan with the intent of introducing visitors to the leading trends, techniques and processes in the field of jewelry design.

Kicking off the day, jeweler Ed Brickman will teach a sold-out class on silver-forged jewelry, in which participants will craft their own silver earrings and learn how to create silver jewelry without the application of heat.

Visitors not participating in the jewelry class will have a chance to sit in on a screening of a short documentary, "Radical Jewelry Makeover: A traveling community mining and recycling project," or attend open studio demonstrations. Artists Tamiko Kawata from Japan and Miriam Mirna Korolkovas from Brazil will demonstrate their techniques and speak about how they conceive and create jewelry using non-traditional materials. Kawata will work with safety pins while Korolkovas will use natural materials such as wood and seeds native to Brazil.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to attend a panel discussion featuring prominent figures in the world of contemporary studio jewelry, including designers Robert Lee Morris, Robert Ebendorf, Daniella Kerner and Susan Kingsley.

The Museum of Arts and Design's jewelry curator, Ursula Ilse-Neuman, will moderate the discussion on current issues in contemporary studio jewelry, and she will also lead a tour of the museum's special exhibit, GlassWear: The Use of Glass in Contemporary Jewelry.

All events featured in the daylong program are free and open to the public with museum admission.
