Washington--The Smithsonian Institution is inviting the public to make history by voting on one of three new setting designs for the legendary Hope Diamond.

The re-setting of the 45.52-carat deep-blue diamond is one in a series of events planned in honor of the 50th anniversary of the donation of the Hope Diamond.

To mark the occasion, Harry Winston Inc., the famed jewelry company whose owner and namesake donated the diamond to the Smithsonian, has designed three contemporary settings.

Beginning today, the public can vote for their favorite online, at SmithsonianChannel.com/Site/Smithsonian/Hope.html. Voting will continue through Sept. 7, and the winning setting will be announced this fall.

Mounted in its new setting, the diamond is expected to debut in May 2010, coinciding with the premiere of the Smithsonian Channel's Mystery of the Hope Diamond documentary, a film recounting the story of the Hope Diamond, from its birth, to its journey through the hands of the kings and queens of Europe, to its final home at the Smithsonian.

From this fall until the new setting is fabricated, the Hope Diamond will be exhibited as a stand-alone gem with no setting.

The Smithsonian said in a media release that while the diamond has on occasion been removed from its setting for research and cleaning, this is the first time it will be on public view entirely by itself.

"This is a rare and exciting opportunity for people to see the Hope Diamond as it has never been seen before," Director of the National Museum of Natural History Cristian Samper said in the release. "It is one of the most popular artifacts at the entire Institution--it is very fitting that we honor its Smithsonian legacy with such a unique celebration."

During the past 50 years, the Hope Diamond has been mounted in a Cartier-designed platinum setting surrounded by 16 pear-shaped and cushion-cut colorless diamonds and suspended from a chain containing 45 diamonds.

The Hope Diamond will return to this original setting in late 2010.

According to the Smithsonian, the diamond was formed more than a billion years ago, 90 miles below the Earth's surface. It was brought to the surface by a volcanic eruption and was discovered in the 17th century in a mine in Golconda, India.

In 1668, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, a French gem merchant, sold the diamond to King Louis XIV of France. The diamond was stolen during the French Revolution and subsequently had many owners, including King George IV of England and Henry Philip Hope, for whom the diamond was named. Harry Winston was the diamond's last private owner.

Over the years, the stone has gained a reputation for supposedly being cursed, bringing misfortune to those who have owned it. Whether or not the stories of sudden deaths and suicides are true, the diamond has remained for the last 50 years behind bulletproof glass, and no unusual tales have been reported.
