J.C. Penney to open in the Big Apple

Plano, Texas -- J.C. Penney Co. has announced plans to open its first-ever Manhattan store.

While the department store giant touts a 107-year history and more than 1,100 stores from coast to coast, it has never operated a store in New York City, home to department stores such as Macy's, Lord and Taylor, Barneys and Saks Fifth Avenue.

But on July 31, that will all change as the company celebrates the store's grand opening.

The new, two-level, 153,000-square-foot J.C. Penney store will reside at 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue in the newly renovated Manhattan Mall, steps from Herald Square and competitor Macy's.

The store will serve a customer base of local residents, commuters, business travelers and tourists, who can enter from the street level as well as directly from two of Manhattan's busiest public transportation terminals: the New York City subway station and the PATH train station.

Although J.C. Penney Co. maintained its corporate office in Manhattan from 1914 to 1988, the store is a first.

"It took more than a hundred years for J.C. Penney to get to Manhattan and now more than ever, the time is right," Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Myron Ullman III said in a media release. "Our company today has the financial strength to create a unique and inviting store in the heart of New York City, and with our assortment of great brands, we will offer Manhattan shoppers the style they want at affordable prices."

The Manhattan store will count nearly 100 registers and approximately 500 associates, making the store team one of the largest of any J.C. Penney store. The team is being training in J.C. Penney's Customer FIRST standards, which empower associates to make customers their number one priority. The customer shopping experience has also been meticulously planned out, as the store's layout and many of its features and amenities have been tailored to fit the needs of time-pressured, commuting customers.

The Manhattan store is one of five J.C. Penney stores celebrating grand openings on July 31. Other openings are planned in Hiram, Ga.; Lee's Summit, Mo.; Fairview, Texas; and Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
